Seven charge-sheeted in Satkhira Palash abduction, murder case

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday pressed charges against seven people in the sensational case for abduction and murder of Palash of Shibnagar village in Satkhira Sadar upazila.
The investigation officer (IO) of the case, CID Sub-Inspector (SI) Momtaz Ahmed submitted the charge sheet to the judicial magistrate's court yesterday, more than four years after the abduction.
The accused are Yakub Ali, 26, Rejaul Karim, 50, his son Manirul Islam, 26, Rejaul's brother Shahidul Islam, 46, Abdul Wadood, 37, and Abdus Samad, 48, of Shibnagar village and Ashraf Ali Montu, 50, of Agaroani village in Sadar upazila.
Palash, 16, son of Abdur Rahim of Shibnagar village, worked as a guard at a shrimp enclosure owned by Rejaul Islam of the same village at Agardari area in Sadar upazila.
Palash went missing on June 29 in 2006, police said.
The victim's mother Monowara Begum filed a case with a court that ordered the officer in charge of Sadar police station to take action after investigation.
Police on March 7 in 2007 recorded a case with Sadar police station accusing Yakub Ali, son of Jasor Ali of the same village for killing Palash.
Yakub Ali surrendered before the court on February 12 in 2008.
On June 21 in 2008, police recovered a skeleton from the safety tank of Agaroani Primary School in Sadar upazila and a DNA test ascertained that it was of Palash. After investigation police submitted charge sheet against Yakub Ali to a Satkhira court on December 11, 2007.
Following a naraji (non-acceptance) petition submitted by the complainant, the court asked the CID to investigate the case on August 28 in 2008.
SI Enamul Haque of the CID was made the IO.
Accused Yakub Ali, who gave a confessional statement before a court, mentioned the names of six other accused and narrated how they killed Palash on November 3 in 2008.
Later IO Enamul Haque was transferred and SI Momtaz Ahmed of the CID was made the new IO of the case.
