Jonmoshutro”: Theatre (Arambagh) brings new play on stage
Theatre (Arambagh) brings its 34th production “Jonmoshutro” onstage. The play premiered at the Experimental Theatre Hall, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, on September 24.
“Jonmoshutro” is written and directed by Gazi Rakayet. The play is Rakayet's sixth directorial work and first script for the stage. Divided into two parts, the play deals with the missing identities of two different individuals.
Rakayet strives to build the story with the depiction of two different eras and relate them with a common themethe diminishing class struggle. The first incident is set against the backdrop of undivided Bengal, while the second occurs in recent times.
In the first plot, the elderly Arfan Bhuiyan meets a young couple, Farida and her husband Shakhwat Daroga, at a launch terminal, on a dark night. Bhuiyan has made the terminal his home for many years, as he awaits someone he lost 30 years ago.
On the other hand, Farida is en route to see her ailing mother. Through a conversation it is revealed that Farida's mother is the person who Bhuiyan is waiting for. Bhuiyan lost her because she belonged to a lower caste.
The second story follows Alfred Daniel, a British-Bangladeshi individual, who comes to Bangladesh in search of his roots. Daniel only knows the name of his birthplace Moksudpur. On his arrival in the village, Daniel comes up against awkward situations, although, he is finally able to find his roots.
Jahangir Bhuiyan, Khaled Anand, Oliur Rahman, Eusha Antara, Khan Jahangir and Tahmina Aktar play the lead roles.
Thandu Raihan's light design attracted attention. While the first part of the play, which depicted a dark night, always remained in subdued lighting, the second half aptly had relatively bright light. Apart from direction, Rakayet also did the stage design. The stage was designed like a launch terminal and the backdrop was designed like the waves of river with light and shadow playing against the set.
Before the staging of the play, Cultural Secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamun formally announced the premiere of the play. Among others, Kamal Lohani, director general of BSA and Liakat Ali Lucky, chairman, Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation were present at the programme.
