Child filmmaker Shiropa Purna wins U.S. award
Shiropa Purna, daughter of artist duo Khalid Mahmud Mithu and Kanak Chapa Chakma, has won another international award for her documentary “Our Boat is Our Address”. The documentary zooms in on the Bedey (gypsy) community.
Shiropa's father Mithu informed that she bagged the best award in the category “Overall Film, Middle School” at the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival, California. Shiropa is the first Bangladeshi filmmaker to win an award at the festival.
Previously, Shiropa received another U.S. award -- Judges' Award for Excellence at the Reel Teens Film Festival, New York -- for the documentary.
Shiropa's documentary delves deep into the lifestyle of the bedey community and tries to reveal the obstacles they have to face regularly. Being extremely poor and always on the move, many of the Bedey children miss primary education. Shiropa's film follows a woman who teaches some of the Bedey children. The documentary also discovers that even without proper education, some of the children are creative.
Shiropa won't attend the award giving ceremony, as she can't miss school, informed her father. Shiropa is a student of fifth grade at Sunny Dale School.
