Murder too over tender
A Bangladesh Chhatra League activist was killed and 20 people were injured yesterday in factional clashes among ruling party men over dropping bid documents in Panchagarh and Dinajpur.
An electrical engineer was beaten to death on Wednesday night allegedly by Jubo League men following a dispute over submission of tender document in Chittagong.
Police said two groups of BCL and Jubo League activists got involved in an altercation at Panchagarh Upazila Nirbahi Office at about 12:30pm over dropping tender document for 10 khas ponds.
At one stage, the Jubo League men attacked BCL activists with sharp weapons, leaving 11 people injured.
Faruk Hossain, 17, organising secretary of ward-1 BCL unit and son of Akbar Ali of Mithapukur village, died on the way to Thakurgaon hospital at about 2:30pm.
The wounded including Liton, 24, son of Rezaul Karim, and Aminul Islam, 24, son of Syed Ali of Jalashi village were taken to Panchagarh Sadar Hospital.
Later, angry BCL men attacked the house of district AL leader Toyabur Rahman. They also put up barricades on Panchagarh-Tentulia road as of 9:00pm yesterday.
Meantime, Jubo League cadres allegedly beat to death Sanjit Das, electrical engineer of Holy Zipper Garments in Kalurghat, and son of Nirmol Kanti Das of Patiya upazila, at Tigerpass in the port city.
Police early yesterday arrested tea vendor Jahirul Islam with links to the murder.
A gang of 25 led by Jubo League cadres Hossain Ali, Murad, Shamim, Rahul and Dony attacked Bangladesh Railway contractor Ali Asgar Hossain, and his friends including Sanjit at a club at Tigerpass at about 7:30pm.
The attackers, equipped with iron rods, sharp weapons and firearms, dragged Sanjit out of the club and beat him up.
Critically wounded Sanjit was rushed to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Police said the attack stemmed from a previous dispute between Ali Asgar and local criminals over submission of tender document at Bangladesh Railway.
At least 10 people were injured in Dinajpur as two Awami League factions clashed over dropping tender document for a Tk 14 crore work of Dinajpur Public Works Department.
Some activists of district unit AL and followers of Mirza Ashfaque, joint secretary of Dinajpur AL and APS of State Minister for Land Mostafizur Rahman, took position in front of the PWD office in the morning and prevented bidders from dropping bid documents, a PWD source said.
When district AL activists tried to drop tender document, Ashfaque's followers attacked them with sharp weapons and sticks, leaving 10 people wounded.
The injured are Shamiul Islam, Rafiqul Islam, Towhid, Jasim, Chhutu, Jemi, Tutul, Jaman and Ananda Mohan. They received treatment at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital.
In Patuakhali, a group of 10-12 AL cadres led by Safiz Uddin entered Baufal municipality office at about 4:00pm yesterday, the last day for submitting tender documents for lease of Baufal Bazar.
They snatched tender document from present leaseholder Mizanur Rahman and damaged office document when a few officials tried to stop them.
