6 houses torched in Rangamati
At least six houses of indigenous families were set on fire at remote Dane Baipachhara at Bagaihat under Baghaichhari upazila here Thursday night.
Unidentified persons burnt down the houses around 8:45pm but their motive could not be traced immediately, sources said.
No death or injury was reported as the families deserted the houses soon after a series of clash had started in hill areas last month.
“I have visited the spot. We could not find any reason behind the incident,” Basirul Haque Bhuiyan, UNO of Baghaichhari upazila, said yesterday.
He added the administration was looking into the matter.
“We were trying to bring indigenous people back to their home after the recent arson attacks and they too have started to return. But they got into panic following the Thursday night's incident,” Sudarshan Chakma, upazila chairman of Baghaichhari, yesterday told The Daily Star.
Meanwhile, a list of some 500 families affected in the recent hill violence was prepared to distribute around Tk 20 lakh among them from the government funds.
Some 390 families received Tk 1000 cash and 20kg of rice last week and one bundle of corrugated iron sheet each on Wednesday from the government.
