Road crashes kill 17, injure 33

At least 17 people were killed and 33 others injured in separate road accidents in Khulna, Jamalpur, Magura, Sirajganj, Bogra, Noakhli, Bagerhat and Satkhira yesterday.

Staff Correspondent from Khulna reports: Four people, including three of a family, were killed in a road accident at Atharomail under Dumuria upazila here yesterday.

The accident occurred when a Satkhira-bound truck hit a three-wheeler van at 2:00pm as its driver lost his control over the steering.

The dead were identified as van passengers Taslima Begum, 24, her daughter Shima, 6, and Taslima's mother Zohra Khatoon, 48, and truck helper Rampada Das, 24.

Jim, 8, the lone survivor of the fatal road accident who was also a passenger of the van, is undergoing treatment at Dumuria Health Complex with severe head injuries.

Police seized the truck. But the driver managed to escape.

A Correspondent from Jamalpur: Three people were killed and 10 others injured when a bus ran over them at Digpaith bus stand in Jamalpur Sadar in the town early yesterday morning.

The accident occurred when a Dhaka-bound bus of Rajib Paribahan from Madarganj in the district ran over the people waiting for bus on the road at the bus stand at around 2.30 am. Three roadside shops were also damaged.

Ujjal, 20, of Pogloi village under Titpolla union of Sadar upazila and Md Ujjal, 32, of Ramnagar village under Digpaith union died on the spot. Julhas Uddin, 32, of Pogloi village under Titpolla union succumbed to his injuries at Jamalpur General Hospital.

All the dead are workers.

They were waiting for bus at Digpaith bus stand to go to Dhaka.

Of the injured, Aziz, Momin and Jotsna are undergoing treatment at Jamalpur General Hospital.

The bodies have been sent to Jamalpur General Hospital for autopsy.

UNB from Magura says: Three people, including mother and son, were killed and 20 others injured when a coach plunged into a roadside ditch at Kochhundi, 8 kms off the town, yesterday morning.

Police said the Benapole-bound coach from Dhaka fell into the ditch beside the Magura-Dhaka highway at about 5:00am, leaving three passengers dead on the spot and injuring 20 others.

The dead were identified as Kamala Ghosh, 68, and her son Prashanta Ghosh, 35, of Lalbagh in Dhaka while Abu Taher, 55, of Fatikchhari upazila in Chittagong.

Six of the injured were rushed to Sadar Hospital in critical condition.

Meanwhile, two motorcyclists, including the officer-in-charge of Raiganj upazila LSD (Local Supply Depot), were killed in Sirajganj when a speeding truck knocked them down at Sholomail.

Police and witnesses said a Dhaka-bound goods-laden truck from Bogra hit the motorbicycle at about 11:00am, leaving OC Mohammed Ali, 40, and Saidul, 35, dead on the spot.

Another report adds: In Bogra, Lima Khatun, 22, a student of Open University, and daughter of Iqbal Hossain of Gosaibari Purbapara in Dhunot, was killed and three others were injured when a truck hit a CNG-run tempo carrying them at Sherpur bus stand in the morning.

In Noakhali, Shakib, 10, son of a teastall owner, died on the spot and two customers, Mofij and Shamsu, were injured when a goods-laden truck ploughed through a roadside teastall at Shimulia in Sonaimuri thana at about 3:30pm.

A correspondent from Bagerhat says: Two people were killed when a covered van and a motorcycle collide head-on on Bagerhat-Rupsha road at Bakultala here yesterday.

The dead were identified as Wahiduzzaman Sheikh, son of Abdul Gafur Sheikh of village Vaga under Rampal upazila and motorcycle rider Saroj Biswas, son of Gour Biswas of the same village.

The Sadar police said the accident occurred when a Khulna-bound covered van and a Bagerhat-bound motorcycle collide at around 3:50pm, leaving the motorcycle riders dead on the spot.

Police the bodies to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Our correspondent from Satkhira adds: An old man was killed in a road accident on Marichchap River Bridge on Satkhira-Assassuni road in Assassuni upazila.

The deceased was identified as Sabud Ali Mistri, 57, of village Sreekalash in Assassuni upazila.

Quoting local people police said the accident took place when an Assassuni Khulna- bound bus knocked him while he was crossing the bridge, leaving Sabud Ali Mistri dead on the spot.
