The new generation

Though we work with the younger generation, we have limited scope to be taught about their informal communication patterns. Generally, they use formal languages and manners in case of communicating in the university arena. Recently, I had an opportunity to be part of a picnic of private university students where the scope of flexible interaction was comparatively high. Our young generation obtained the opportunity to present themselves in their own character. I was also interesting to know their taste of 'smart' music, languages, gestures, postures and facial expressions. Time and technology have changed them.

One positive thing is found clearly. They are interested in Bengali songs which were not that popular in our times. Because at that time in case of picnic or such type of amusement programmes playing of Hindi and English songs was very popular.

My earnest request to the young generation is, please at first learn how to speak in our own standard language. Nobody can become truly smart without having the ability to speak in his or her mother language.

Time and technology have changed the entire world, not just Bangladesh. Bengali songs were not popular because they could not be compared to either Hindi or English songs. Today, many of our songs are as good/bad as Hindi or English ones that our children don't need to know the difference. It would have been nice if the author mentioned that the students were listening to traditional or folk songs in our language. Obviously, Bengali Language is extremely important, but we must forget that it is essential to know English Language well as it is accepted as one of the most influential languages in the world. Nowadays, many of our students have desire to go abroad for further studies. Having good knowledge of English can only enhance their chances of getting their dreams fulfilled.
