Hasina bursts into tears

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was overwhelmed when the Supreme Court announced its verdict into the murder of her father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, yesterday.

"She broke into tears, remembering her family members and others who were brutally assassinated during the August 15 coup," said Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam.

Sheikh Hasina and her sister, Sheikh Rehana, survived the attack that took place in their family home in 1975 because they were abroad at the time.

Islam, who accompanied Sheikh Hasina to her official residence to hear the verdict, added, "She demanded justice and she got it. She does not believe in revenge."

The state-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) reported that Sheikh Hasina recited from the Holy Quran as she was conveyed the verdict.

She also expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah by offering prayers and called upon her people to offer their own prayers at mosques, temples, churches and other places of worship.

The prime minister had returned from Rome yesterday morning after attending the World Summit on Food Security 2009.

On Thursday afternoon she met with cabinet members, advisory committee members, presidium and central leaders of the Awami League and its associated organisations in Jamuna.

Among the AL members were Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Amir Hossain Amu, Suranjit Sengupta, Abdur Razzak, Abdul Latif Siddiqui, Syed Ashraful Islam and Chief Whip Abdus Shahid.

The Supreme Court handed down death sentences to the twelve retired and dismissed army men for their role in the assassination of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Dear Prime Minister

We are moved to see how you have reacted to the judgement. You are a true human being and in many ways you resemble Bangabandhu. When Bangabandhu came back to Bangladesh, he also showed the attitude of 'no-revenge' to enemies. This is great, but please also note that the enemies did not behave with Bangabandhu the way he treated them. The enemies are not only the enemies of Bangabandhu's family; they are the enemies of Bangladesh, its sovereignty, its people, its culture, its value and humanity. They love people's blood and they made several attempts to kill you and people who support Bangladesh. We have now seen how powerful people were involved in gun firing while you were living in Road 32, firing on you in Green road in 1980s. Kotalipara grenade attack, Ramna Batamul attack, 21st August grenade attack, Sylhets attack on you and Anwar Chowdhury, Narayangonj AL office attack, attack on BDR. God saved you in all these attacks. However, the bad people will keep on doing this if you do not act differently. At least, you should know that enemies are not like you - they are dangerous. Of course, yesterday's judgement has sent a very powerful message to those bad people that sinners will have to pay the price- sooner or later, but they will never be able to get away with their sin. God bless you and Bangladesh.

Thank God, we have people who kept fighting for the justice . If these villains were kept beyond prosecution and allowed to live freely in our country, that would have been a big shame for the nation. I am glad that we passed the test.
