Rajshahi Protection Move-ment Council demanded immediate implementation of North Rajshahi Irrigation Project with a view to saving the northern region from desertification process.
The committee urged the government to take necessary steps for saving the country form global climatic changes. They formed a human chain at Saheb Bazar point in the city yesterday morning.
They also urged the government to take effective measures for the development of neglected Rajshahi division.
The speakers in the programme said the underground water level has been falling in the Barind area of the district for irrigating land using deep tube-well water.
They said irrigation by using deep tube-well water is a temporary arrangement and it will not work after a certain period. So they underscored the need for implementing North Rajshahi Irrigation Project to save the region from desertification.
Fazle Hossain Badsha, MP said the present government is concerned about the development of the region and save the region from the effect of climate change.
Convenor of the committee Jamat Khan, former mayor and BNP leader Mizanur Rahman Minu, acting general secretary of city AL Shafique Rahman Badsha, among others, addressed the programme.
