15 hurt as AL, JP backed workers clash

Fifteen people were injured as pro-Awami League (AL) and pro-Jatiya Party (JP) workers clashed at local supply depot (LSD) on Friday.

Eight of the injured--Mobidul, 45, Surat Ali, 60, Shahidul Islam, 45, Dilder, 42, Guljer, 32, Rashidul, 30, and Shafiar Rahman, 40, were admitted to Nilphamari Sadar Hospital while the rest given first aid.

Injured Surat Ali was shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital yesterday morning as his condition deteriorated.

Witnesses said labour leader Shahidul Islam, also a leader of Jatiya Sramik Party, had an altercation with Pro AL sramik leader Mobidul Islam at around 4:00pm over payment of daily wages among the workers.

At one stage, workers of pro-AL and pro-Sramik Party, equipped with lethal weapons, attacked each other, leaving 15 from both sides injured.

Police dispersed the clashing groups and brought the situation under control. Police have been deployed at the depot.
