Dinajpur Food Poisoning

30 more admitted to hospital

Thirty more people, affected with food poisoning after taking meals at a milad mahfil at Rukindipur-Shabderpara village under Akkelpur upazila of Dinajpur on Tuesday night, were admitted to the upazila health complex yesterday.

Earlier 56 people were admitted to health complexes at Joypurhat and Akkelpur on Tuesday midnight as they had severe stomach ache and vomiting after eating at the function.

On the occasion, around 600 people were entertained with several dishes including fishes and meats but most of them became victim of food poisoning the same night, said villagers and workers at a temporary medical camp set up to tackle the situation.

The number of affected people later rose to over 450.

Abdul Mozid arranged the milad mahfil on the death anniversary of his father-in-law Nurul Islam at Rukindipur-Shabderpara village on Tuesday night.

Within a couple of hours of having the dishes, many people felt stomach ache and started vomiting while some of them had fever too, doctors said.

Informed, Akkelpur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Abdul Motaleb rushed to the spot and arranged a temporary medical camp at the village primary school as the number of patients was too high.

Joypurhat Civil Surgeon Md Abu Bakkar Siddique accompanied by health officials also visited the village the same night.

"The situation is under control as we set up a temporary medical camp at the village. Most of the affected people are being treated at their home and the district hospital arranged all-out support including sufficient medicines," said the civil surgeon.

"I and my family members have also been affected with food poisoning. We are undergoing treatment at Joypurhat Health Complex," said Abdul Mozid, host of the function.
