Call to protect Mirpur playground

Residents of Mirpur-12 yesterday demanded illegal establishments in Lalmath, the only playground in the area, be immediately demolished.

At a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity, residents of the area along with Paribesh Bachao Andolon (PBA) and Barnak Krira O Sanskritik Angan alleged the encroachers are violating a directive of the High Court.

The High Court on July 30 issued a directive to demolish all the illegal structures by October 30.

However, the illegal structures are still there and influential quarters have put up signboards on the land with a fresh bid to grab the playground, they added.

A BDR shop is currently occupying part of the western side of the ground while a makeshift kitchen market grew up around the shop gradually narrowing the space.

Chairman of PBA Abu Naser Khan and columnist Syed Abul Maksud also spoke at the press conference.
