Kushtia polytechnic closed after bomb attack

Kushtia Polytechnic Institute was closed after a bomb attack that severely injured Bangladesh Chhatra League's joint secretary of the institute unit on Tuesday.

The polytechnic authorities at an urgent meeting of teacher’s council decided to close the institute to avoid further untoward incident.

The meeting also ordered the students to vacate two halls—one for male and another for female--by 4:00pm, our Kushtia correspondent reports.

According to police, a group of unidentified youth went to the room No-209 of Mir Mosarraf Hossain hall at about 11:30am and hurled two bombs on BCL Kushtia polytechnic unit joint secretary Tanzir Alam Tazir. Tazir was alone at the room during the incident.

The gang swiftly disappeared from the scene after the incident.

Severely injured Tazir was rushed to Kushtia General Hospital where he is undergoing treatment.

Doctors said the BCL leader sustained chest, hands and face injuries.

Kushtia Sadar police and members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) rushed to the spot.

Police recovered splinters from the spot.

When contacted, principal of the institute Atahar Hossain told The Daily Star that the ongoing examinations of different sessions however will be continued.

The institute will be resumed when the situation become normal, he added.

KPI and Kushtia Government College BCL units brought a joint protest rally in the town and blamed Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), student front of the BNP, and Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami, for launching the bomb attack.

They also demanded immediate arrest of the culprits.

A tense situation has been prevailing in the institution.

Additional police have been deployed in and around the institute to avoid any unwanted incident.
