The UN Security Council is urging Afghanistan's new government to improve security, promote national unity and fight corruption and the narcotics trade.
The council "acknowledged" the conclusion of the tumultuous
electoral process with President Hamid Karzai declared the winner after challenger Abdullah Abdullah withdrew from a runoff race, saying it could not be free or fair.
The Security Council issued a statement saying it looked forward to working with the president after a closed-door briefing by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Ban flew to Afghanistan following the bombing of a UN guest house and held talks with both Karzai and Abdullah.
