Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in Thmpu Friday afternoon amidst a red carpet reception on a 3-day bilateral visit to Bhutan.
She was warmly received by Bhutanese Prime Minister Jigmi Y Thinley and his spouse with bouquet at Paro International Airport at 1:15pm (local time). She was also presented Bhutanese traditional Khaddar scarf.
Later, the Prime Minister was driven in a ceremonial motorcade to her hotel.
Earlier today, Sheikh Hasina left Dhaka for Bhutan when the two countries are expected to sign an agreement to boost trade and economic cooperation between the close neighbours.
Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister GM Quader, Chief Whip Abdus Shaheed and high ranking civil and military officials saw off the prime minister at Zia International Airport as her plane took off at about 1:15pm (BST).
This is the prime minister’s first bilateral visit to a South Asian country. Bhutan is the first country that recognised Bangladesh as an independent state in 1971.
During her stay, Hasina will hold bilateral talks with Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgye and Bhutanese Prime Minister Jigmi Y Thinley.
The prime minister will handover some earthquake relief materials to her Bhutanese counterpart.
Her entourage includes Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, Industries Minister Dilip Barua, Commerce Minister Faruk Khan, PM’s Adviser HT Imam, Principal Secretary Abdul Karim and former Ambassador Ziauddin.
The prime minister will return home on Monday.
