Pharmacies strike in port city

Bangladesh Chemists and Druggists Association (BCDA) enforced a daylong strike on Thursday in the port city protesting what they said continued harassment by Rapid Action Battalion.

About 1200 pharmacies in the port city kept their shutters down responding to the call of strike.

Earlier on Wednesday night, a team of Rab-7 conducted a raid at ‘Popular Medicine House’ in the city’s Hajari Lane area and seized 16 cartons of drugs.

Tapan Kanti Biswas, owner of the enterprise, alleged that the Rab men assaulted him, his two sons and an employee.

BCDA General Secretary of Chittagong district unit Omar Ali alleged that the Rab harassed them in various ways in the last six months without following the proper law.

He said they would announce new action programs on Saturday unless the administration takes steps to stop such harassment.
