Prime Minister Sheikh HasinaPrime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina on Monday asked the garment owners to pay the workers properly to upgrade living standard of the working people.
Terming the workers as 'driving force' for running the factories, the prime minister also asked the owners to investigate into the reasons behind the frequent labour unrest in the garment factories.
"However, the government will not tolerate any kind of anarchism in the garment sector as this is the main source of foreign currency earning for the country," Sheikh Hasina said.
"The latest labour unrest was carried out by some conspirators," the prime minister said.
She advised the owners to construct dormitories for the workers to ensure better accommodation of the workers.
"The owners can take assistance from the government's housing fund to build the dormitories for the workers. It will need only one percent service charge for receiving money from this fund," she said.
Sheikh Hasina was speaking at the 5th Knitexpo-09, the largest annual event of the knitwear manufacturers and exporters at Dhaka Sheraton Hotel as the chief guest.
She also asked the manufacturers and exporters to produce apparel items according to the demand of the market and to produce skilled manpower so that they can cater the service of fine apparel item manufacturing.
"We are planning to open up some new foreign missions to explore new markets of Bangladeshi products," Hasina said adding that the government will extend all out facilities to the businessmen for building a better economy.
