EC awaits govt order for CHT polls: CEC

ATM Shamsul Huda

Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda said today the Election Commission cannot take any decision about the district council elections of Chittagong Hill Tracts without a government order.

"Constitutional amendment is necessary for preparing separate voter list for the council elections as mentioned in the CHT Peace Accord. It is an issue of political decision," he said.

The CEC was addressing a meeting on site selection for the proposed server station in all upazilas of Rangamati at the district conference room.

He said, "After the government decision, we are ready to hold election any time".

ATM Shamsul Huda informed that the EC had placed a proposal to the last caretaker government in this regard and said the present government will consider the issue as it is working on many significant matters of CHT affairs.

The Election Commission has yet not received any letter of request from the government about the CHT district council elections, he said.
