Helal set to be Bagerhat-1 MP

File photo

Sheikh Helaluddin of Awami League is all set to be the member of parliament from Bagerhat-1 constituency as his contestants did not appeal against the cancellation of their candidacy.

The Election Commission cancelled the candidacy of two other candidates for the seat, M Rahman Sajal of BNP and MM Obaidur Rahman (Independent), for defaulting on loan and giving false information.

The last date for filing appeal against the EC decision was today. The election to the seat vacated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was scheduled to be held on April 2.

Helal had fled the country after 1/11 change of the government and returned home after Awami League formed the government two months ago.

The court tried Helal in absentia and sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment in two criminal cases - 13 years for amassing unearned wealth and 7 years for extortion.
