Candidacy of all but Helal cancelled for Bagerhat-1

Sheikh Helaluddin of Awami League is close to be the member of parliament for Bagerhat-1 constituency as the candidacy of his contestants have been cancelled.

Helal's contestants were M Rahman Sajal of BNP and MM Obaidur Rahman (Independent).

Sajal was disqualified for defaulting on loan while information given by Obaidur did not tally with the voter list.

A former MP and cousin of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Helal returns to the seat vacated by Hasina who was elected in three constituencies in the December 29 elections.

Sheikh Helal had fled the country after 1/11 change of the government and returned home after Awami League formed the government two months ago.

The court tried Sheikh Helal in absentia and sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment in two criminal cases - 13 years for amassing unearned wealth and 7 years for extortion.
