The 33-hour mutiny at the BDR headquarters in Pilkhana apparently ended this evening with the mutinous border guards laying down their arms.
Police took control of the BDR base in the evening after the mutineers freed the officers held hostages, and surrendered their arms.
Home Minister Sahara Khatun told reporters at about 8:00pm that the arms were laid down in front of her. She said she handed the keys of the armouries to police.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Naim Ahmed took charges of the BDR headquarters, said Sahara.
Several contingents of police were deployed in and around the border guards' headquarters. Policemen were seen guarding the five entrances.
Press Secretary of Prime Minister Abul Kalam Azad said that the situation was now under control of the government.
"All the arms BDR members surrendered were deposited in two armouries. And the keys were given to me," the home minister said.
The DMP commissioner told The Daily Star that entire BDR headquarters and its armoury were now under police control.
Referring to the DMP commissioner, a private TV channel reported that police were preparing to carry out intensive search to find out the missing officers and their relatives.
Police were also patrolling the areas around Pilkhana.
