Govt looks to cut backlog of cases in courts

In a bid to reduce the backlog of cases pending trial in different courts, the government is planning to roll out a system to have the criminal and civil cases disposed of outside courts.

"Many criminal and civil cases could be disposed of through the Alternative Dispute Resolution or ADR. We have a plan. We will introduce it. We are seriously thinking about it," Law Minister Shafique Ahmed told reporters at his office today.

He said the government would soon talk to the Chief Justice on the matter.

Asked if a commission like the Truth and Accountability Commission would be formed, the minister said, "It's for sure that the TAC will not be revived. The government is thinking whether to launch the Alternate Dispute Resolution."

"If the disputes can be resolved through ADR, the conflicting groups will be able to return to social life. We see people filing case against brothers, relatives and neighbours. These enmity can be resolved psychologically," Shafique said.
