New IGP vows to disown dirty cops
The new inspector general of police (IGP), AKM Shahidul Hoque, today said he will follow a standard of zero tolerance to criminal offence conducted by any policeman.
Wrongdoers in the force will be made to face consequences, the police boss asserted while speaking at a press conference on his first day at police headquarters in Fulbaria this afternoon.
“The police are a big institution. A policeman, personally, can deviate from morality. In that case, we will not own him, nor shall we show indulgence. We will treat him to the furthest extent possible with existing laws,” he said.
“Police force will prioritise on maintaining law and order situation, discipline, public security and health for the sake of the civilians,” he said.
The police force will squash the threat of terrorism and fundamentalism working alongside with the people, he said adding that steps would be undertaken to bridge the gap with the common people to diminish the negative impressions of the police force.
Yesterday, in a major reshuffle move, AKM Shahidul Hoque was made the chief, inspector general, of police. The order from the home ministry was to take effect from today.
Hoque was made DMP commissioner after he served as superintendent of police in different districts including Chittagong. Before the promotion, he was the additional IGP (administration).
He replaced the longest-serving IGP, Hassan Mahmood Khandker, who joined to his duties in August 31, 2010.
