New chief executive for GP
Rajeev Sethi has been appointed as the chief executive of Grameenphone, the country's biggest mobile operator said in a statement yesterday.
Sethi is scheduled to join office on December 1, replacing Vivek Sood.
Sood, who took charge of GP in January 2013, will move back to India to join Uninor as its CEO. Prior to his Bangladesh assignment, Sood served Uninor as its chief financial officer.
“I'm honoured to join Grameenphone and become part of the efforts to provide 'internet for all' in Bangladesh,” Sethi said in his message.
“I'm humble and grateful for the opportunity to join the team and serving more than 50 million customers with critical mobile services.”
Prior to the appointment, Sethi has been serving Uninor—the Indian subsidiary of Telenor—as the chief marketing officer for the last two years. He also served Uninor's Uttar Pradesh east circle as its head for over three years.
An MBA in marketing, finance and operations from the Indian Institute of Management in Lucknow, Sethi has significant experience in the ICT industry, including executive engagements in companies such as Vodafone, HP, Hutchison Telecom and Asian Paints, GP said.
“Grameenphone and Uninor are currently experiencing significant market growth, and they are both delivering on the strategic ambition of 'internet for all',” said Sigve Brekke, executive vice president and head of Telenor in Asia. Telenor, the largest telecoms service provider in Norway, owns 55.8 percent of Grameenphone.
“Combined, the two companies represent nearly 90 million mobile customers. Grameenphone is an undisputed market leader in Bangladesh and Uninor continues to capture market share in India,” Brekke said.
“With these executive changes, Telenor aims to stimulate further growth and strengthen our position with customers in these markets.”
