New broadcast policy to curb media freedom: BNP
BNP in a formal reaction today said the government's move to formulate the National Broadcast Policy is nothing but to gag media and people's freedom of speech.
"The National Broadcasting Policy is a genius black law. The present illegal government wants to control media formulating the policy," BNP standing committee member Abdul Mayeen Khan told reporters at a press conference in the party chairperson Khaleda Zia's Gulshan office this afternoon.
Urging the government to retrace from its move to formulate the policy immediately, he also said the 'failed government' wanted that all the media would work as per its subservient.
The cabinet yesterday approved the National Broadcast Policy-2014, keeping much scope for the government to misuse the policy in the name of maintaining standard of news, programmes and advertisements in the electronic media.
Once in force, all contents of radio and television will come under strict government monitoring. False, discriminatory and misleading information and statistics must be avoided in news and programmes, according to the draft policy.
