Naveed Mahbub tickles the funny bones at IGCC
Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre organised an evening of stand-up comedy by Naveed Mahbub and friends was held on Saturday at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre, Gulshan-1, Dhaka.
Comedians Naveed Mahbub, Mosharraf Yaafi and Pervez Suman performed to a packed crowd, in the first stand-up comedy show to be held at the IGCC. The audience laughed non-stop, as the comedians spoke about the Dhaka traffic, power outages, kids, the corporate world, air travel and so on. Yaafi humorously narrated his observations on movies while Suman sang parody songs and made light of garbled radio transmissions.
While working as an engineer in the US, Mahbub started his comedy career performing in English at small venues. In 2007, he won the Best Male Comedian title at the 2007 Original Las Vegas Comedy Festival, which catapulted his comedy career into mainstream. His 'home club' is the world famous Comedy Store in Hollywood where big names such as David Letterman, Jay Leno and Eddie Murphy had started their comedy careers.
In 2009, he returned to Bangladesh to establish a 'stand-up' comedy scene and founded Bangladesh's first ever stand-up comedy venue, Naveed's Comedy Club. He is thus credited to have pioneered the art of stand-up comedy in Bangladesh.
The event was held in association with Asian Paints, IRCON and Marico Bangladesh.
