Nandigram Jamaat ameer sent to jail
A Bogra court yesterday sent Nandigram Upazila Parishad Chairman and upazila Jamaat Ameer Nurul Islam Mondol, 55, to jail, rejecting his bail prayer.
The Jamaat leader is one of the accused in the cases for vandalism, arson attacks and carrying out subversive activities in the upazila parishad complex on March 3 last year.
After investigation, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nandigram Police Station Shahjahan Ali, also the investigation officer (IO) of the cases, pressed charges against Nurul Islam and 267 other BNP-Jamaat men on February 28 this year.
The accused then appeared before the High Court and sought bail. The court granted the accused temporary bail, asking them to appear before the lower court and seek regular bail by June 19.
Of the accused, 193 BNP-Jamaat men appeared in the Court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Ahmed Shahriar Tarique on June 19 this year and prayed for bail. The court rejected their bail prayers and sent them to jail. The court also issued arrest warrants against the rest 75 accused, including Nurul Islam.
Islam appeared in the District and Sessions Judge's Court-2 yesterday noon and prayed for bail. After hearing, Judge Md Sabbir Foyez rejected the bail prayer send him to jail.
Jamaat upazila unit General Secretary Monjurul Islam Raju and Jatiyatabadi ulema Dal district unit President Fazle Rabbi Toha are also among the charge-sheeted accused.
