Nagorik Oikya concerned over ‘indemnity’ to law enforcers
Nagorik Oikya today expressed grave concern over “the indemnity given to law enforcers” by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to plug the violence during BNP-led 20-party’s agitation.
Its Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna slammed both BNP and the ruling Awami League for their actions and called for urgent talks to end the prevailing political impasse.
“Rab, BGB and police chiefs have spoken extreme. Has the premier given them indemnity for offense?” he said while speaking at a view exchange programme with journalists in Dhaka.
The comments came in view of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ordering the police yesterday to “do anything to stop” the prevailing violence in the country. She had said she would undertake the responsibility of the actions.
In view of the recent incident of “gunfights”, Manna slammed the government terming those incidents as “state-patronised terrorism”. “What the BNP is doing is also terrorism in the name of movement.”
“The government is suing BNP chief Khaleda Zia for her mastermind role in violence. But now when the police is being ordered to shoot, I ask this: will Sheikh Hasina be sued likewise when she is not in power?” he said.
Manna said he saw a dialogue as the only way out of the prevailing impasse and his organisation will move for a rally on January 31 in this regard. “If we are not allowed to stage the rally, we will move the High Court.”
