My celluloid ambitions are skyrocketing -- Jaya
One of the most celebrated artistes of the country, Jaya Ahsan is very choosy about her films. She recently wrapped up shooting for a movie and has signed up for another one. She is again going to Kolkata for shooting a movie. The two-time National Film Award winner spoke to the Daily Star about Kolkata's Tollygunge and Dhaka cinema in a recent conversation, along with her Eid plans and nostalgia.
You recently signed up for a movie in West Bengal?
Jaya: “Rajkahini” is based on the partition of 1947. I met its director Srijit at a film festival in Singapore. He is a very talented filmmaker from India. I will play the key role in the film featuring Sabitri Chattyapadhyay, Jishu Sengupto, Koushik Sen, Rituparno, Batta Basu and many others.
When will shooting start?
Jaya: May be in November, in Kolkata. From what I understand so far, parts of the movie will be shot in Dhaka also.
Tell us about your debut West Bengal film “Aborto”?
Jaya: It became very popular there. As my first film in Kolkata it was really a positive sign for my career.
What about your preparation for “Rajkahini”?
Jaya: I always do my homework before playing a character. I will do the same for “Rajkahini”.
You are also busy shooting for “Purno Doirgho Prem Kahani-2”?
Jaya: Shooting is underway. It features Shakib Khan, Emon and Omar Sani. I hope “Purno Doirgho Prem Kahani-2” will be a commercially successful movie like its predecessor. As sequels are rarely seen in our film industry, I feel very good as an artiste. I hope this one will entertain the audiences even more than the previous one. Scriptwriter Rumman Rashid has tried to give his best.
Tell us about the film “Zero Degree”?
Jaya: Shooting has been wrapped up for that one. Now it goes for editing. I'm very hopeful about “Zero Degree” as it has a unique plot which may change the taste of the audience. I want everyone to watch the movie in cinema halls.
Talk us through your current celluloid ambitions?
Jaya: They are skyrocketing. I love the entire film process. I want to see our film industry reach its peak again. I gave up doing TV plays as I felt a responsibility towards the cinematic medium. However, it is very tough to survive purely as a film artiste.
How do you feel about your film awards?
Jaya: I'm really very honoured to receive the National Film Award twice over. I'm very thankful to the jury board and the audiences too. I want to work on more good scripts. Also, I want to stay in people's minds.
On to a different note now; where will you celebrate Eid?
Jaya: As every year, I will spend the festival in Dhaka with my family.
What is your routine on Eid day?
Jaya: Paying a visit to my grandmother. It's a family tradition I never miss out on.
What was Eid day like in your childhood?
Jaya: It was fun-filled. We enjoyed the entire day with friends and relatives.
