When'll the hassles end?

Commuters have been suffering for the last one year because of the poor and dangerous condition of the 15km stretch of the Gabtoli to Swarighat road in the capital. The situation worsens in the rainy season as large potholes, puddles and mud put pedestrians and vehicles in extreme difficulty. Spotty repairs add to the problem as dumped materials, including bricks, narrow down the road. The photos were taken yesterday. Photo: Anisur Rahman

going green

Who says plants cannot move? The ones Jahangir Sikdar planted do! Driver of an environment-friendly vehicle, painted green, this true friend of the nature added more green to the vehicle with live plants. He has got all sorts of flower, decorative and vegetable plants set around the little driving cubicle in the auto rickshaw. He says anyone can help save Dhaka by planting trees -- beside the streets, in offices or at homes. His photo with the vehicle was taken at Gabtoli yesterday. Photo: Palash Khan

risky renovation work

Renovation work of the sidewalk and drainage left in a half done state for months on Mirpur Road near Asadgate intersection in the capital. The authorities did not even bother to place any caution sign or make the area off limits to pedestrians. As a result, pedestrians using either the sidewalk or the road risk sustaining serious injuries. Photo: Anisur Rahman
