Mujib should be charged with sedition: Tarique
Reacting to sedition charges against him, BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman has said that a sedition case should be filed against Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for being the president of Bangladesh after returning home with Pakistani passport, Bangla daily Prothom Alo reports.
He claimed that he was charged with sedition for what he said "upholding the real history".
Tarique, also the elder son of BNP chief and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, was addressing a discussion in East London yesterday, according to the Prothom Alo report.
He claimed again that his father was "not only the first proclaimer of independence but also the first elected president of the independent Bangladesh.
On October 18, Advocate Moshiur Rahman Malek, president of Bangabandhu Foundation, filed the sedition case against Tarique for terming Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as “Pakbandhu (Friend of Pakistan)”.
“Sheikh Mujibur Rahman cannot be the Father of the Nation. He returned to the country with a Pakistani passport. Someone who accepts Pakistani passport even after Bangladesh's independence is a citizen of that country according to law,” Tarique said while addressing the discussion at York Hall in East London on September 29.
About late president Ziaur Rahman, Tarique said today that his father neither assumed the power forcibly nor he had any involvement with the four national leaders.
Denying Awami League leader Syed Ashraful Islam’s allegation that Zia was involvement with the jail killing incident, the BNP leader said AL itself had committed the crime.
He claimed that Zia was under the house arrest at his cantonment residence on November 2, 1975, a day before the jail killing day.
