Muhith blasts media for report on money whitening
In a fresh twist of statement, the finance minister today insisted that the government did not offer any scope to legalise black money in the new fiscal year.
AMA Muhith also lambasted the media for reports that the government has allowed unquestioned legalisation of black money in real estate.
"The real estate sector will get the opportunity through the payment of fine as per law," Muhith said while talking to reporters the Economic Relations Division (ERD) office at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.
Criticising media for recent reports on allowing the black money whitening scope, Muhith said it's a law that those who have undisclosed money will have to pay fine.
"So, your (media) whole statements in all the newspapers are utterly nonsense," the minister said.
Three weeks after Muhith publicly vowed to discontinue the scope for legalising black money in the new budget, the minister on Saturday said the financial plan will allow money whitening in real estate investment.
Different media published reports criticising the minister's decision of allowing the money whitening scope following his U-turn.
Between fiscal 1971-72 and 2012-13, about Tk 13,808 crore was whitened. During the period, the NBR received taxes of Tk 1,455 crore, which is less than 1 percent of the revenue collection target for fiscal 2014-15.
