'Mugger' killed in ‘gunfight’ with cops
An alleged mugger was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Terokhada upazila of Khulna last night.
Four policemen were also injured in the gunfight that took place at Kodla around 11:30pm, reports our Khulna correspondent.
Police identified the deceased as Babul Molla, 35, also a regional leader of outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP), said Md Rafiqul Islam, OC of Terokhada Police Station.
At least eight cases including robbery and mugging were filed against Babul.
Babul along with their 12 to 15 cohorts looted Tk 15.65 lakh from two betel leaf traders at Pakhimara in the upazila around 6:00pm.
Locals, hearing screams of the traders, managed to catch the three of them -- Babul, Sagor and Shanto -- when they were running away riding motorcycles, OC Rafiqul said. Later, they were handed over to police station.
Police taking the trio went Kodla area to arrest their associates and recover the looted money.
Sensing the presence of police, the other gang members opened gunfire. The law enforcers retaliated with bullets, triggering the “gunfight”.
At one stage, Babul came in the line of fire and died on the spot while the two other detainess are now in police custody, the OC said.
Four policemen including OC Rafiqul sustained minor injuries in the gunfight.
Police recovered three local firearms and 10 bullets from the spot but are yet to recover the looted money, the OC said.
On October 5, at least 13 alleged robbers were killed in gunfights” with law enforcers near the Sundarbans in Khulna.
