‘Militant kingpin’ held in Dhaka
A man who was allegedly running his own militant organisation in the country was arrested by detectives in Purana Paltan area of Dhaka Thursday night.
The law enforcers claimed that Hafizur Rahman, 22, is ring leader of an international militant organisation which recruits Jihadis from across the world.
Members of Detective Branch of police (DB) detained Hafizur after conducting a raid in Surama Tower at Comrade Monisingh Road around 8:30pm on Thursday, Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said.
He was addressing a press conference held at the Media Centre of the DMP this noon.
During the primary interrogation, Hafizur said he has been engaged in collecting members from across the country, especially in Sylhet and Habiganj for expanding militant activities of his own group, Monirul said.
Hafizur a second year student of Tibriya Government College at Shahjalal Municipality in Sylhet was communicating with the international militant group, Monir said.
On the basis of information, the Counter Terrorism and Trans National Crimes unit of the DB has been following movement and activities of the arrestee since long and at one stage he has been arrested.
Responding to a query, the police official said, "So far we know, none have any direct link in Bangladesh with the IS militant group."
"We have information that some people are trying to build a bridge of communication via Bangladesh expatriates with the militant group," he said.
"We are informed that a Bangladesh expatriate who is financially affluent has come here recently and is staying to collect members for the militant group," the detective added.
