MCCI celebrates 110th anniversary today
On the occasion of its 110th founding anniversary, the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) will begin its two-day celebration today in the capital.
The country's oldest trade chamber will organise a host of events to mark the occasion.
Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, a former president of India, will attend as the guest of honour at the main event at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on Saturday, the chamber said in a statement.
Kalam, also a renowned scientist, will take part in a dialogue with students from different universities at Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka today.
AMA Muhith, finance minister, Amir Hossain Amu, industries minister, and Tofail Ahmed, commerce minister, will attend the ceremony as special guests.
MCCI started operations in 1904 when Narayanganj Chamber of Commerce, the first modern chamber of its kind in the Eastern Bengal and Assam province, was established in the then key commercial trading centre under the British Empire. The chamber segued into today's MCCI in 1979.
Over the century, the chamber, thanks to its non-profit and non-political nature, has become a unique organisation with a strong campaigning voice in the interest of businesses in and beyond Bangladesh, where it promotes pro-growth policies.
Over 300 plus member companies come from all sectors, representing most large enterprises in Bangladeshi, including multinationals.
The MCCI was set up as a unique platform to influence decision-makers and shape policy, and ensure the best possible environment for businesses.
Currently, it is represented in 16 advisory committees of the government, ranging from exports and consultative committees of industries, commerce, communications, jute, textiles, power ministries, Chittagong Port, Customs House, National Board of Revenue, Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution and Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission.
