Matin’s body handed over to Dhaka Medical College for research
The body of language movement hero Abdul Matin was handed over to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for medical research after hundreds of his admirers paid last tributes to him at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka today.
Gulbadan Nesa Monika, wife of the language movement veteran, handed over the body to DMCH Principal Shafiul Alam at the Shaheed Minar premises at 1:47pm, reports our correspondent from the spot.
Matin’s coffin was kept at the Shaheed Minar for two hours since noon so that his admirers can pay tribute to Matin, popularly known as Bhasha Matin for his pivotal role in the Language Movement of 1952.
Aged 88, the language movement veteran died yesterday morning, bringing an end to an illustrious political career that inspired hundreds of thousands in building a right-based society.
As his body was brought at the Shaheed Minar on an ambulance decorated with flowers at 12:05pm, people from all walks of life lined up to pay tribute with flowers.
Ministers, politicians and cultural activists along with general people started rushing to the Shaheed Minar since morning to pay homage to the hero.
Health Minister Mohammad Nasim, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, Cultural Minister Asaduzzaman Nur, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, among others, were present there.
The body was kept at the mortuary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) the whole night.
Matin suffered a stroke on August 18 and was treated at a city hospital before being shifted to BSMMU the following day. He was unconscious since then.
He underwent a surgery on August 20 and was put on life support on October 3, BSMMU Director (Hospital) Brig Gen (retd) Abdul Majid Bhuiyan told The Daily Star.
After his death, a team of Sandhani, a voluntary organisation, collected his corneas as per the last wish of the leftist leader. Later, his body was kept at the hospital mortuary.
