Man killed as BCL activists open fire
A businessman was shot dead as he tried to save a neighbour during a clash between two factions of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at Govt Victoria College in Comilla yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Ahsan Habib Sumu, 38, a sand trader and resident of Monoherpur in the town.
Locals said supporters of Saleh Ahmed, former general secretary of BCL unit of the college, engaged in an altercation with Chuttu, brother of Shajib Chakrabarti alias Gittu.
Gittu is the president of Munshefbari unit of BCL. As news of the altercation spread, Gittu along with his supporters rushed to the campus and the two sides engaged in a chase and counter chase.
At one stage, supporters of Saleh swooped on the residence of Gittu and Chuttu at Munshefbari in Monoherpur and attacked Pritom, a cousin of the siblings.
Witnessing the incident from a neighbouring house, Sumu rushed to the spot to save Pritom. But the attackers shot Sumu in the back, leaving him critically injured.
He was immediately rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital where the doctors pronounced him dead. Pritom was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition became critical.
Mohammad Shamsuzzaman, inspector (investigation) of Kotwali Police Station, said a BCL faction had shot the trader dead. An investigation is going on in connection with the incident, he added.
