Make 2 lakes in Kuril area defying all pressure: PM
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today directed the Housing and Public Works Ministry officials to construct two lakes in the city’s Kuril Flyover area defying any pressure from all quarters.
"There’s no scope for any compromise here," she said.
The Prime Minister came up with the directive while delivering her introductory speech at Housing and Public Works Ministry. She had been at the ministry as part of her visit to all ministries to see the progress and development of their activities.
Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain was present at the meeting along with his ministry’s senior officials.
Hasina said two lakes are supposed to be constructed in the Kuril Flyover area as per the original plan. "I know there’re many hindrances… there’s some land of the police, they create obstacles…Jamuna and Bashundhara have strong objections, too, but all this cannot make any change, the two lakes will be constructed as per the original plan. So this should be done very quickly," she said.
The Prime Minister also said Jamuna and Bashundrara groups want to construct box-culverts in that area. “Without these two lakes, the city will be in danger during monsoon when there’ll be heavy rains…these two lakes will be used as water reservoirs," she said.
About Jamuna and Bashundhara groups’ demand, Hasina categorically said there will be no box-culvert and there will be only open lakes in the area.
She also said Jamuna and Bashundhara groups could build bridges or flyovers over the lakes as these two groups have no fund constraints.
‘POINTLESS TO PRESERVE ALL BRITISH-ERA BUILDINGS’
Strongly criticising the attitude of protecting British colonial legacies in the country, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said there is no need to preserve all the British-era buildings in the name of preserving heritage.
"What's the heritage… we did the slavery of British… I don't think we need to protect their heritage," she said.
Hasina said there is a tendency in the country to preserve the unnecessary structures in the name of preserving the tradition.
In this connection, the Prime Minister said the people of this land fought against the British rule and gave blood to free themselves from the British colonial regime.
"I don't think there is any need to preserve any building of British regime that is now in deplorable condition. There’s no need to preserve all the red buildings (the buildings built during the British regime with red bricks)" she said.
But the Prime Minister said that some buildings might be preserved if those structures are eye-catching ones. "Those buildings can be preserved which are necessary considering the architectural aspects," she said.
She also said some people might get hurt listening to her comments about the British regime buildings. "But this is how I think," she added.
Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain was, among others, present at the meeting.
