Main accused in rape case arrested in Thakurgaon
Police arrested the prime accused in the case for rape of a teenage girl early yesterday at Nishchintapur of municipality area.
The arrestee is Sumon, 24, son of Hannu alias Nannu, a fruit trader at Kalibari Bazar and resident of Nischintapur.
Officer in charge of Thakurgaon Police Station AKM Mehedi Hasan told this correspondent over cell phone that acting on a tip-off, a police team raided the house of Sumon around 2:00am and arrested him.
Earlier on Saturday night police arrested another accused Sohel Rana from a mess at Bashirpara in the municipality.
On 14 October, at about 6:00pm, Sumon and his two accomplices -- Sohel Rana, 27, of Bosirpara and Nadim, 25, of Bazarpara in the municipality area -- came to the girl's house and forcibly took the girl to a mess at Boshirpara in the town. On the same night they gang raped her there.
As the condition of girl deteriorated due to bleeding, the rapists took her to Sumon's relative Jobed Ali's house at Lohagara village in Pirganj upazila of the district on 15 October.
The culprits raped the girl for four more days at the house.
Later the victim's mother was able to contact Sumon over cell phone and trace out the spot and rescued the girl from a house of one Jobed Ali at Lohagara village in Pirganj upazila on Saturday afternoon with the help of her relatives and admitted to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital.
District unit of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad is giving legal assistance to the victim and assured her family of taking responsibility of the girl if they allow them.
They also held a press conference at Thakurgaon Press Club auditorium afternoon and demanded exemplary punishment of the culprits.
