Write to Mita

Write to Mita

Dear Mita,
I am a final year student of Textile Engineering and I have fallen in love with a girl I saw in Bashundhara City. It was love at first sight and I gave her my number but she has not called me. I can't stop thinking about her. I can't concentrate on my studies or anything else for that matter. Please tell me how I can find her!

Distraught

Dear Distraught,
However distraught you might be I really cannot help you. If the girl was interested she would have called or made some contact. Obviously she is not and therefore you must not pursue this any further. She might have many reasons for not responding and one of those might be that she is already engaged to someone else. I therefore suggest that you get over this and get back to your studies. I am sure there will be many more opportunities to fall in love and be loved in return.

Dear Mita,
I have a sleep related problem. I fall asleep everywhere, at work on buses, rickshaws, at social gatherings, pretty much wherever. Initially everyone who knows me found this funny, but now my family is seriously worried about my health and safety. I was robbed twice on buses and I didn't even know it! Also this is becoming very embarrassing at work and my boss has told me not too subtly that I need to do something about it. Please tell me what you think is wrong with me.

Sleepy

Dear Sleepy,
This is a sleep disorder the other way round. Usually, people have a problem going to sleep, but your symptom is also prevalent. I suggest that you see a good physician. There might be a physical problem, which is manifesting in excessive sleepiness. There is something called acute fatigue symptom when a person feels lethargic and wants to sleep all the time. Don't get too disheartened but at the same time approach the problem scientifically. .

Dear Mita,
I love animals and have had many pets over the years, but they all seem to die for some reason or the other. I used to take good care of them, feed them, and clean up after them. They all went to a good vet and were all given their shots and groomed regularly, but they all died. My parents think I should stop buying pets but I love taking care of animals and I really want to get a new dog (my last one died of liver failure 5 months ago). Do you think I should get one? Or am I just bad luck for all these poor animals?

Animal Lover

Dear Animal Lover,
There is nothing called bad luck for animals. All your animals have died of natural causes and there is nothing you can do. Talk to a vet about taking on a new pet, in fact you should consult the vet in selecting your pet. Perhaps they come to you with some disease and then die prematurely. However having said that you know that animals have a short life span and never live as much as we want them to.

Dear Mita,
My office just shifted to a fancy new building and I was really excited about this. I decorated my cubicle and the common area with a lot of care and effort. Everyone seemed to appreciate this at first, but after about a week or so, I would come to office everyday and find my wall hangings on the floor or hanging upside down. The pictures in my cubicle were also ripped and moved around. This saddens me a lot but at the same time it makes me angry because I did it all for people who work here not just for myself. I don't know how to address this with my colleagues because I am not a confrontational person by nature and it is difficult for me to ask them directly but I feel like they have disrespected me and I would really appreciate it if you could tell me how I can talk to them about it.

Insulted.

Dear Insulted,
You are not the only person who avoids confrontation, there are many like you and I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing. The important point to remember is that you are not considered a “push over” which means people should not think of you as weak or gutless. You absolutely should get to the bottom of this and find out who is vandalizing your space. I am sure there is someone in the office who is doing it and you will surely find someone who will tell you. After you have identified the person or persons, engage in a dialogue. Perhaps there is something going on in the office that you are not aware of. There could also be an issue of your acceptability among you colleagues. Whatever it might be, this merits some serious investigation.
