Write to Mita

Dear Mita,
I have lost interest in my studies. I always used to wanted to be a doctor but have ended up studying law and I just don't feel like studying anymore. What should I do?
Disinterested

Dear Disinterested,
If there is time and options available then go back to the profession of your choice. If not, then get into something else that will interest you. However, law is a very interesting and worthwhile profession. Try to find out more about it before you abandon it completely.

Dear Mita,
I'm 20 years old and don't know what to do with my life. I'm confused and indecisive myself and don't even listen to my parents. I don't see my friends very often either and I'm just plain bored. I can't concentrate on my studies and have taken a break and am working with my brother. But after the first work I just got tired of it. It was supposed to be a learning experience but I get tired of working from morning to night and then coming home at night and going straight to bed (forced by my parents) so that I can get up and go to work again the next morning. I feel like I'm wasting my life. What should I do?
Scared to Die

Dear Scared,
It is very important to find the balance between work and leisure. You sound burnt out and the break you took is not helping. If the break was meant for you to relax it has not served the purpose. Working with your brother has not worked either. You need to take off and relax and also reflect on what you want to do. Get together with friends and others who might have gone through the same challenges. You are young and all this is a part of growing up, don't get too disheartened because it will surely pass.

Dear Mita,
I am Muslim by birth but my education, knowledge and surrounding environment has led me to become an atheist. I have been in a relationship with my girlfriend for a year but after discovering that I am an atheist she couldn't accept it and broke up with me. She even cursed me, saying I would never be happy in life with any woman because I'm an atheist. I am in terrible despair as this was my first love. I do a lot of philanthropic work and strongly believe in humanity, yet why do people hate me?
Enlightened Depressed

Dear Depressed,
If you have made a choice to be an atheist then you have to live with it. Being different or going against the stream is always difficult and challenging. However, you must be sensitive to the environment around you. There is no need to flout your atheist values around. Regarding your girlfriend, it is sad but perhaps she could not adjust to this reality and perhaps it is best that you parted now. You philanthropic work is indeed commendable and your concern for humanity I think is a religion by itself.

Dear Mita,
I'm a 4th year university student in love with a 1st year college student of English. She also cares for me but is shy about expressing it. She is a very pious, soft-minded and shy woman. The irony, however, is that her parents are a bit greedy and don't care about female education. They want to marry her off to a migrant worker with a lot of money. I sent a proposal to her guardians but they rejected me because I'm poor and don't have a job.
AH

Dear AH,
Most importantly, is that girl interested in you? She seems to be too young to make up her mind yet. If her father wants to marry her off then there is little you can do, especially since you don't even know if she likes you. Moreover you also need time to complete your education and settle down before you think of marriage. You cannot blame her parents for rejecting your proposal. There is plenty of time for love, marriage and family, at present your preoccupation should be to get established.
