Trial, Error and Some Success

Photo: Zahedul I Khan

The two biggest successes of our one-year-old government are possibly the closure in the Bangabandhu murder case and the distribution of free textbooks to schoolchildren throughout the country. The BDR mutiny, too, most agree, was well-handled. The issue of land-grabbing has been addressed, as has the traffic situation, though, of course, there are still many miles to go. The clocks, however, were cause for great confusion, with parents of children having to go to school in the dark hours doubtful about the positive impact of daylight savings. One year may be too short a time to judge a government's success and promises made by the Awami League remain to be fulfilled, but at least it cannot be blamed for not trying.
