Locals protest 'objectionable' remarks at waz mehfil

Our Correspondent, Lalmonirhat

Locals swooped on the main speaker of a waz mehfil (religious function) as he made derogatory remarks about the prime minister and Gonojagorom Mancha at Mogholhat playground in Sadar upazila of the district on Friday night.
They damaged the loudspeaker, dais and canopy during the attack. Main speaker Maulana Nasir Uddin was, however, rescued from the public wrath by the organisers of the mehfil where at least 5, 000 people, both male and female, were present.
At least eight people, including two women, sustained injuries while they were running helter-skelter during the incident.
Police quoted locals as saying that the trouble began at around 11:30pm when Hafez Maulana Nasir Uddin of Thakurgaon made 'objectionable comment' about the prime mnister and Gonojagoron Mancha in his speech at the waz mehfil.
Local union parishad (UP) member Moslem Uddin said the untoward situation occurred after the Maulana had made some derogatory remarks about Sheikh Hasina.
Maidul Islam, one of the organisers of the programme, said AL men attacked the mehfil while Maulana Nasir was expersing his views about the country's present political situation.
Refuting the allegation, Mogholhat union Awami League General Secretary Golam Farooque said local people became agitated and attacked the waz mehfil due to objectionable speeches made by the maulana.
Being informed, a police team rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said SI Mahbub Islam of Lalmonirhat Sadar Police station.
