SUMMER PICNICS decoded
Spring is over, and you need not see a calendar to testify to that. The scorching sun, the unbearable humidity and mercury high up in the thermometer makes a precise announcement -- summer is already here.
It is possible that you did not get a chance to enjoy the short winter, followed by the spring cameo and have a decent 'traditional' picnic. Let summer not get in your way, because the time is ripe to reap the best this season has to offer and indulge in a summer picnic.
The idea may sound new. Of course, what would one expect when the mercury reads 36 degrees in summer? A picnic is the last thing on most of our to-do lists, but a little effort can make for a fun event for the entire family. Why not go for an all-girls' picnic when you have that chance?
Now for some basics.
Be prepared
Make sure you check the met office forecast before heading towards the wilderness on the hottest day of the month. Also beware of the summer rain. They make a pleasant environment, but not ideal for a picnic outdoors. You should be looking at a moderate temperature, low humidity.
Wet wipes and sunblock are a must. Take umbrellas if necessary.
It is best if you go to a familiar place for the outing. The off neighbourhood park, if you are bestowed with one, may just serve the purpose. Make sure you are allowed to take food and drinks inside the park. Do Not Litter!
Set the scene
Here are the basics you will need: comfy -- preferably white -- bed sheets and pillows. Rather than going for paper plates and disposable forks, glasses and spoons, opt for reusable everyday cutlery and dishes. Napkins are a must. You will also need baskets to transport the necessities to the exact spot. A visit to the neighbourhood supermarket will solve that problem as plastic baskets are widely available at reasonable prices.
If you want to go green, opt for the baskets made from hogla leaves available at many make-shift shops around the city. These make a wonderful addition to your home décor and can equally add to setting up the atmosphere for the picnic.
Eat smart
Food should not be your priority. How many times have you gone out for that special time with the gang? Chances are you are just like the rest of us, hungry for some quality time away from the hustle and the bustle. Sandwiches are the ubiquitous picnic refreshment and to add to it, include homemade watermelon slush. You simply cannot go wrong with that. And don't forget water -- with the sun blazing hot, you will need more than slushes to replenish the lost water from the body. And don't forget the ice.
That's entertainment
If you will include children in the day out, make sure you have endless options for games and other activities. Whether you are opting for a cosy picnic with your significant other or a family gathering, make sure you never get bored out in the open.
Frisbees are great! So is chess or monopoly. Football makes a better picnic sport than cricket as no special skills are required to engage in a soccer match.
Engage in a voice battle if you will and find who has the best voice in the group.
Dress smart
Be in your comfortable best. It is also a good idea to forego makeup altogether. You are planning to have a fun time, not to dazzle people. Opt for fabrics that breathe and shy away from wearing dark-coloured dresses as they absorb heat quickly. No denim!
