Keeping your cherubs snuggly in winter
Ever wonder why it's so hard to dress a kid? Mothers would agree that it's simply a challenge to get the little tykes out of their Pjs in the morning; getting them to wear layers of winter clothes is a different ball game altogether! The list of woes doesn't just end here, after you have put on that sock, sweater and muffler, they'd end up looking like fuzzy balls of wool, almost gobbled up by their winter wear, waddling about under all of those layers, and decidedly unhappy to boot. Why is that? What is about soft and woolly that children don't like?
And perhaps as a testimony, the narrative almost never ends there. Few minutes after you are don putting those on, and some casual scampering around and hopping on the bed on the children's part, they end up sweating profusely beneath those laboriously placed layers no matter how starkly cold it is, ultimately catching the dreaded cold anyway! Such dilemmas of the mom continue throughout all seasons creating frustrations and fraying temperaments as never expected.
Children usually have a higher metabolism, sweating abundantly all throughout the year. Few others have a weak immune system, feeling numb with cold, even on a slightly breezy morning and some are just normal. For those who are super-active and running around whenever they see a ball; light winter wear is suggestible - maybe a Spiderman crew-neck slipover or a Frozen branded cardigan. These little bundles of joy can also be dressed in cotton hoodies, widely available in Bongo Bazaar and Badruddoja Market opposite the Dhaka College gate. In the recent weather condition, where winter seems to be reticent to finally arrive, full- sleeved pure cotton t-shirts and full pants are good enough. However if you decide to utilise the kids' winter vacation, visiting the less urbanised and hilly regions like Sylhet, Chittagong, Rajshahishican let you have a more proper taste of the fleeting and shy winter season. A bit more heavy-duty winter wear is advisable there.
Areas where there is a chance to witness fog and mist, the head must be covered carefully; children proportionally lose more heat through their heads. The covered head can be spruced up with toque, balaclava helmets, wedge style caps etc for the little gentlemen while the little ladies can wear fedora hats, trappers, cloches etc.
Ponchos and capes are 'IN' material now and NO, it's not meant for moms only! If you wanted to look cute amongst friends, then both of you (mommy and the little darling) could wear the same style of ponchos and bags at a party; together, you'd definitely be able to catch a few warm and fuzzy sentiments wafting your way!
For those who live abroad, an additional range of winter wear is a must-- like earmuffs and gloves – especially if your kids love grappling in the snow, spending hours to make the smiling snowman. And aaahh! Yes, boots! In our country we don't get snow; covered shoes like sneakers are passable. But in the Western side of the world, sneakers are futile, snow will simply seep in – and snow boots are a must!
In Bangladesh, we eagerly wait for winter so that we could devour yummilicious delicacies like home-made rice cakes, attend colourful weddings, and sport that suit or that jamavar shawl. Whatever the outlook, here's to hoping the little tykes enjoy the weather and don't catch a cold!
