Meaningful gifts for Eid
Although the month of Ramadan is most closely associated with devotion, abstinence and self-actualisation, it is also that time of the year when Muslims around the world engage in the act of giving. In addition to gifts for loved ones, this year Star Lifestyle focuses on giving back to society through meaningful Eid gestures.
Read through for our highlight of four organisations that can serve as mediums for contribution to worthy causes.
JAAGO
This Eid, Jaago is endorsing itself as a means to “give back to society.” Zakat is an integral part of Ramadan, but people sometimes forget that Zakat does not necessarily need to constitute of the general “saris” and “lungis” that are distributed during this time, it can also include giving to the education or sponsoring of a child. Jaago aims to break the cycle of poverty through education.
Jaago currently provides free-of-cost schooling to 1800 underprivileged children. For these 1800 kids a total of Tk. 8 to 9 lakhs is required to simply make the uniforms. For some people making such a big monetary commitment would not be possible but you can sponsor a child within the budget that is spent on getting Eid gifts for other people or even the Zakat that you give. It costs Tk. 24,000/year to sponsor a child, a child who would be provided with not only an education but also all requirements for schooling. For more information, please visit jaago.com.bd
THRIVE
A basic necessity of life is food, a necessity that we go without during Ramadan by choice. But there are countless children in our country who are forced to do so due to adversity. Thrive is an organisation that provides well-balanced, nutritious meals to underprivileged children, to ensure that at least starvation is no longer a cause for death.
Thrive estimates that it costs approximately Tk30 to provide one child with a healthy meal and there are around 750 children that Thrive supports. In addition to their food runs, Thrive also benefits local farmers by buying their produce in bulk. It also endorses positive connectivity between their volunteers and their beneficiaries.
The joy you get from doing something for these children is not only a part of the spirit and feel of Ramadan but also it gives you a sense of accomplishing something humane. Please visit www.thrive-global.org to learn more about Thrive's initiatives.
OBHOYARONNO
Moving away from Zakat where you directly contribute to the underprivileged through means of food and education, Obhoyaronno is an animal welfare organisation that indirectly works towards the improvement of society by addressing the public health issue of rabies. This disease is associated with non-vaccinated dog bites and Obhoyaronno seeks to use any funding they receive to provide vaccination and sterilisation for street dogs, ensure that proper care is given to these animals and to stop animal abuse. Obhoyaronno works to rescue, rehabilitate and provide shelter for street animals. So for that animal lover friend of yours, instead of getting clothes or accessories why not make a contribution towards animal welfare? It would not only help the animals but also make the streets a safer place for everyone. Obhoyaronno can be contacted through their Facebook page athttps://www.facebook.com/pages/Obhoyaronno-Bangladesh-Animal-Welfare-Foundation/149573081756353?fref=ts
FOOTSTEPS
“Take a step and be the change.” This is FootStep's motto. This is a youth based organisation that can be greatly aided and expanded by funding, as FootSteps aspires to tackle socio-economic issues bringing in different initiatives for betterment of the entire population of Bangladesh including betterment of the underprivileged. This is an externalised organisation, which merges with other third party organisations to develop and implement different projects.
For example, this summer they are bringing out the Project Trishna, which aims to make clean water more accessible for people by installing water purifiers as opposed to having to purchase water. A lot of diseases associated with consumption of contaminated water could be avoided through this initiative.
This organisation has many such initiatives, such as WeCan, which aims to provide public trash cans for cleaner streets and thereby a cleaner city.
So whatever you gift to FootSteps is going to go to the direct betterment of your city and the population. A cleaner Bangladesh would invariably be a healthier, more prosperous Bangladesh.
