Jeans and denim: evergreen picks
There are limits to how much one can stretch a piece of jeans. Thankfully, the same does not hold true for how much one can push it up the fashion barometer. A piece of cotton denim, as far as styling goes, is timeless and as relevant today as it was...mmm...always!
The story of the jeans is quite well-known, but our favourite all-cotton denim wearables remain as curious pieces inside our closets since the time they were fashioned by the working class in the fields and the mines of North America in the 1800s. Even in hot humid climates like ours, denim is considered wearable throughout the year, and more so in winter. It is warm and comfortable, and what fashionistas love most — trendy.
Fashion 2019 is over and out, and from what predictions style gurus are making, winter and spring here in the country will call out to all things denim. True, there will always be a place for bootlegs, boyfriend jeans (even mom jeans) in our lives, but what is most important for 2020 is that jeans will witness the comeback of some style statements from the recent past.
Some say, everyone will toss out their skinny jeans this season. We are not that certain, but truthfully, the signs do say that the balance will tilt towards flares and loose fits. Double denim is in for the ladies, and out for the gents. And if you want to re-visit those fancied moments of childhood, one can slip into bib overalls. Just don't overdo it!
NEW ARRIVALS
There's nothing more reassuring than the rigid feel of 100 percent cotton denim against the skin. With a slim cut from hip to ankle, a non-stretch style always makes one feel razor-thin sans the awkwardness. On the opposite end of the fashion pole are high-waisted mom jeans. No longer considered a fashion faux pas, well-fitted mom jeans are definitely one of the coolest things you can wear this winter.
Girls can go for the added fun factor with a pair of wide-legged jeans; a welcome addition to the retro section of your closet. They are not only chic, but also fresh — without a doubt the most fashion-forward style of denim this season.
And then there are those who prefer black, and we have the godsend black denim for them. Ideal for bringing that rock-and-roll vibe in your wardrobe, black jeans are more than just a simple denim in a different shade.
Speaking of rock-and-roll, hate it as much as you want, but there is no denying the ripple effect ripped and distressed jeans will have on the fashion quotient of 2020. You may opt to balance that casual, undone look with a proper high-neck blouse or a blazer.
A word of caution — men ought to steer clear of all things distressed, especially of the denim kind.
THE FINAL WORD
Jeans never worked formally; they are the lingua franca of fashionistas. They speak of the quintessential 'careless and free' speech; doesn't matter if you opt for the vintage blue jeans or the Bermuda-style long shorts, culottes, or cropped wide-leg styles.
