Dearest Diary By this time if the political situation had been stable we would have been duly serenaded by the blaring picnic buses on their way to Gazipur or any other picnic spot outside Dhaka. Some office or garment factory having their annual picnic bash is normally the most common sight during this time of the year. But alas! Every thing seems to be on hold due to reasons best left unsaid. Anyway, as you can understand diary, I am getting on to the other side of the hill. Why I say this, is because I keep on traipsing down memory lane. And you only do that when you are "nearly" on the other side of the hill. (Nearly being the operative word). So Alzheimer's be damned. Memory lane it is. While growing up in independent houses, with lawns and foliage, I am sure people from my generation had picnics in their own backyards. I know I did with my younger sister and brother in attendance. I remember with some help from the cook and darowan of the house, we built a makeshift stove out of stacked up brick, in which we stuffed dry leaves & twigs to get the fire going. And how we trembled with excitement sinisterly and quite menacingly if I may add. So with eyes stinging from the smoke and blisters forming, we would cook our egg curry and soggy khichuri and basically have the time of our lives. What fun we had indulging in such simple pleasures. Things and times have changed. Our children are now exposed to apartments and KFC chicken as picnic food. So, it got me thinking; why don't I write some easy and fun recipes, which children with some parental guidance can make by themselves, have a picnic, enjoy and get a feeling of being involved and accomplishment. I am sure not only will it be good for them, it will definitely bring out the best in them. So, have a fun filled and safe picnic the Sam Q way.

TIPS A winter's tale
First and foremost, look into all the arrangements once again. Tickets or reservations for the venue, confirmation of the guest list, double check on whether the assigned people are making provision for the supplies and get all your last minute shopping done by the night before, latest. If the excursion requires you to start off very early in the morning, you would do away with a great deal of morning stress by leaving your clothes ready to wear by the time you retire to bed. Next up, we have an essential necessary for any outing, irrespective of the season. Be it picnics or day-long arrangements of winter sports, first aid kits cannot be done without. However, this particular prerequisite becomes all the more vital with winter outings because more likely than not, physical activities are going to be top of the agenda, automatically increasing the probability of cuts, sores and bruises. Even if a fully equipped first aid pack is unavailable, make sure you are at least well stocked with a decent supply of the bare minimums-band aid, aspirin, anti septic and the likes. And since we have already decided winter outings are next to impossible without sports, attention must be shifted to exactly that. Depending on where and who you are planning the event with, gather all your sports equipment a couple of days in advance. If you are going in a group, you can weigh out your options and then get around to collectively getting the sports gear according to what you choose to play. Come winter, and being prepared apparel-wise is an entirely different experience. For outings that last throughout the day, you would be better off making arrangements for varying levels of temperature. Engaging in sports and being directly under the sun during the day is likely to make you feel warmer than you will in the evening, so make sure you take along an extra shawl or jersey that you might not deem necessary earlier on. Special precautions are also necessary if children are going to be accompanying and what with the increased involvement in outdoor activities, the longevity of the jaunt and the fluctuating temperature levels, taking several sets of clothing including socks and scarves or mufflers is strongly advised. Include in this two types of shoes, trainers for when you play and something less restraining for the rest of the By Subhi Shama Reehu |
