Prepare to minimise earthquake casualty
In the early morning of January 4, a strong earthquake jolted Bangladesh. Experts said that there is a chance that by 2020, a strong earthquake will strike our country. It is anticipated to be devastating, as 80,000 vulnerable buildings in Dhaka city alone are at risk of collapsing, thereby resulting in a huge casualty toll.
Preparations to minimise the damage must be started from this moment. Faulty buildings should be marked and necessary steps must be taken to make them safe. Authorities concerned should not waste time dilly-dallying because the outcome of the negligence will be catastrophic.
