Bangladesh should stop river dredging
Singapore has been using Cambodian sand to expand its borders for over a decade using as much as 72 million tonnes, according to UN estimates. But acccording to the Times of Oman, Cambodia has permanently banned the exportation of sand to Singapore. Why? Because of the immense environmental damage dredging has done to its waterways over many years.
Bangladesh should consider following Cambodia's good example and halt its current dredging practices in the Jamuna River. It should quickly end its shortsighted operations for exporting reclamation sand to Singapore and Maldives, before even more damage is done. If not, like Cambodia, Bangladesh will eventually destroy what nature intended it to have, all for the sake of profit, and come to regret it.
For Bangladesh, a healthy environment should come first.
